  • Local rules: in the dredged channel, Suezmax, Aframax, Capesize and container ships need a Portable Pilot Unit, and container ships need two pilots (Portaria SUAPE No. 190/2026); non-conventional container ships and inner-port tankers need two pilots and a portable pilot unit for every manoeuvre (Portarias SUAPE No. 136/2019, No. 044/2021, No. 037/2021 and No. 063/2021).

Confirm before fixing the vessel. Our operations desk can obtain the current figure from the pilots.

Planning a call at Suape

  • Check two limits for every call: the draft for the route (channel CMR) and the draft for the berth (CMA). Portaria SUAPE No. 190/2026 sets both, and the CMR is capped by the CMA of the berth.
  • The dredged east channel is still in its ramp-up under Portaria SUAPE No. 103/2025. The port does not publish the block in force, so confirm it with the pilots before fixing a length or draft.
  • Ships drawing less than 14.0 m may use the dredged channel only with prior authorisation from the port authority (Portaria SUAPE No. 190/2026, item 2.4).
  • Larger container ships and inner-port tankers follow their own port authority portarias (Nos. 136/2019, 044/2021, 037/2021 and 063/2021), with two pilots, more tugs and their own wind limits.
  • Wind limits apply port-wide: no berthing in the outer basin with mean wind above 20 knots, and container ships in the dredged channel are limited to 15 knots of mean wind.

Before arrival, your agent arranges free pratique with ANVISA and, where needed, requests the port authority's consent for bunkering at least 48 hours ahead and for waste collection at least 36 hours ahead.

Port of Suape: frequently asked questions

What is the maximum draft at the Port of Suape?

It depends on the route and the berth. Portaria SUAPE No. 190/2026, signed on 30 September 2026, sets a recommended maximum draft (CMR) for each channel and basin and a maximum berthing draft (CMA) for each berth, both to DHN chart datum and corrected for the predicted tide; the CMR is capped by the CMA of the berth. In the dredged east channel the limits also depend on significant wave height and, during the ramp-up, on Portaria SUAPE No. 103/2025. As of 21 October 2026. The pilots confirm the draft for each call.

Is pilotage compulsory at the Port of Suape?

Yes. Suape is in pilotage zone ZP-09 (Recife e Suape), where pilotage is compulsory under the Capitania's NPCP-2021/PE, and federal law makes pilotage compulsory in every pilotage zone for vessels above 500 gross tonnage, with limited exceptions. Container ships in the dredged channel, and the larger container ships and inner-port tankers covered by their own portarias, take two pilots. The port authority lists Pernambuco Pilots as the provider.

Can a ship drawing less than 14 m use Suape's dredged channel?

Only with prior authorisation from the port authority. Portaria SUAPE No. 190/2026 (item 2.4) reserves the dredged east channel mainly for ships drawing more than 14.0 m; during the ramp-up, the draft limits of Portaria SUAPE No. 103/2025 apply.

What wind limits apply to manoeuvres at Suape?

As of 21 October 2026, under Portaria SUAPE No. 190/2026: no berthing in the outer basin with mean wind above 20 knots (unberthing is allowed below 25 knots), ships over 210 m LOA may not enter or leave the inner basin with mean wind above 20 knots, and any manoeuvre needs visibility above 500 yards. In the dredged channel, container ships are limited to 15 knots of mean wind.

Which airport do crews use for a crew change at Suape?

Recife/Guararapes - Gilberto Freyre International Airport (REC), about 42 km by road, roughly 40 minutes without traffic. The Polícia Federal handles immigration for crew changes and has desks in the Port Authority Building at Suape.
